Which Industries will Benefit The Most From Blockchain - According to Blockchain Companies

Have you heard about DAG protocols? Some say that they are the next level for blockchain. They’ll solve all of blockchain’s shortcomings and allow for mass adoption. But what are they, actually? And why can they be better? First things first. To get a better understanding of the whole space, let’s take a closer look at what blockchain is and what it isn’t. Blockchain came out in 2008, right after the global financial crisis. It started as a 9-page white paper named . A few months later, the first Bitcoin had been mined by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto. About a week later, the first transaction had been made– , the creator of a system called Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System Satoshi sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney “Reusable Proof of Work”. But in the original Bitcoin paper, “block” and “chain” were separate words. Over time, more and more people merged these two, creating a new word – blockchain. And since Bitcoin and its technology were the first, the original chain of blocks is called – the Blockchain. Actually, most of such protocols are now called blockchains, but Distributed Ledger Technology is far more accurate and inclusive to the technologies that are emerging, such as DAG protocols. Many observers believe that DAG protocols are here to lay the real technological foundations for globally adopted decentralized solutions. Sometimes they call them “Blockchain 3.0”. What is so different about DAG? How Blockchain Works To better understand the differences, let’s first focus on how blockchain technology works. It contains information about transactions between parties, just like any other database. Blockchain is a ledger. It gets tricky, however, if you want this database to be immutable to attacks and – most importantly – held in the same state on many devices at the same time. As a ledger, blockchain carries information similar to “Ann gave X to Brad at 5:34:23 PM on 09/16/19”. Or maybe more like: “X amount of the currency has been transferred from this wallet address to that wallet address at this specific date”. Blockchain is transparent, so everyone can see the history of transactions – it’s just not that obvious what wallet address is connected to whom. Information about this data transfer is passed to another block, but with a hashcode and nonce that make it impossible to alter – if someone would like to change a record, he would have to change every previous one accordingly. Every record is dependent on the previous one, forming a chain. A large enough number of records is formed into a block. In Proof of Work consensus algorithms (like Bitcoin), the blocks are agreed upon (created) by miners that solve specific cryptographic riddles. All computers in the network are nodes – they hold the exact same copy of blockchain. The nodes have to agree upon a transaction; if the majority of them agrees, it is recorded. As a Proof of Work, they create the hash code that is written into the transaction. Similarly to what happens inside the blocks, each block has its own hash that is dependent on the previous one. – the more users there are in the ecosystem, the safer the network gets. But we’ll tackle that later on. Decentralization is essential to most blockchains What Is a DAG? The acronym “DAG” stands for Directed Acyclic Graph. Although it is relatively new to the blockchain sphere, it is quite a common structure in computer science and mathematics. The name tells you a lot – You can think of it as an intermediate in the process of creating a blockchain – some of its blocks are already connected with an edge (and hence ordered), but some are not. Additional effort is required to construct a final chain based on a DAG, and that is exactly what the DAG-based consensus protocol is needed for. a DAG is a graph that has a direction and doesn’t have any cycles. DAG vs Blockchain: Technical Differences Why did I explain how blockchain works and then introduce DAGs? Because many observers and especially DAG supporters think that this is the real blockchain 3.0. That it’s the natural way for blockchain to elevate and move closer to mainstream adoption. But technically, If you were to visualize blockchain and Aleph Zero, you’d see both as chains of blocks. It’s because in both protocols the chain of transactions is a desired result. they are not that different. The difference lies inside the blocks. We say that in Aleph Zero, there’s a In blockchain, it is called Nakamoto consensus, and it’s based on Proof of Work. DAG-based Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol. Proof of Work adds latency to the network in order to ensure it is synchronized and resilient to most attacks. But usually in a DAG-based protocol, this energy-consumption-heavy computing is completely unnecessary. The new transactions are validated by the previous ones. No mining is required. What Are the Benefits of DAG? A DAG protocol like Aleph Zero has many advantages over traditional, PoW blockchain. It produces the consensus much faster than a blockchain, and thanks to that, it is able to maintain high transaction speeds when operating on a high scale, something that Bitcoin’s blockchain could not achieve. For example, has This is the power of a DAG at its best. Aleph Zero’s proof-of-concept protocol reached 100,000 Tx/s on a test network of 128 nodes. The second benefit is that DAG utilization can be mining-free. With such an architecture, without mining fees and miners to validate the transactions, the transactions can be much cheaper, or even marginal or free. That’s why DAGs have been identified as suitable for IoT applications. But this also points us to a real-world usable currency held on DAGs. You wouldn’t want to pay, say, a $0.50 blockchain transaction fee for a $0.90 cola, would you? But you would want to pay the usual 0.0004 BTC (about $4) to . If we were to use crypto as a currency for small, everyday payments, DAG seems to be the tech to use. transfer a couple of million dollars secure and fast What are potential challenges with DAGs? They tend to be less decentralized than blockchains, especially THE blockchain. Many DAG projects approach the (de)centralization problem differently. For example, Hashgraph uses a committee of 39 nodes run by global corporations. Is this truly decentralized? We’d argue that it is not, but for the problems and use cases that they are aiming to solve, this seems enough. Usually, In Aleph Zero, we are implementing a mechanism that chooses rotating committee members randomly (in the test net we are usually using 128 nodes, but we are aiming for a much higher number). it’s not easy to decentralize DAG to the same level as blockchain. The security of many DLTs is dependent on how well-spread the network is – the more nodes there are, the harder it is to control the network. Bitcoin or Ethereum are yet unbeatable at that, and there are no signs of changing this status. And still, Bitcoin’s mining is not as decentralized as one would hope, as there are only a few major mining pools that are responsible for validating the transactions of the whole network. Don’t worry; it’s not that they “control” the network. The current situation is just (but it is aligned with the rules of capitalism). In Aleph Zero, although it is a DAG, we believe we have found a satisfying solution to the decentralization problem. You can read about our ideas on not aligned with the idea of Bitcoin arXiv. Will DAG Replace Blockchain? The discussion around DAG and blockchain is increasing in intensity, speculation, and reach. Yes, DAG can solve most of blockchain’s issues, but Bitcoin’s blockchain is the oldest, the biggest, and, therefore, the most decentralized DLT out there. On the other hand, the whole DLT space right now, based on market size, is only as big as a large corporation like PepsiCo. Until blockchain really goes mainstream and as an industry grows two or three times its current size, we can’t be sure if 10 years from now Bitcoin’s blockchain will still be the #1 crypto technology in the world. But now? It’s more a matter of use cases and whether blockchain or DAG suits them more. For example, you’d use DAG to let IoT devices perform micropayments on their own, but if you were to transfer large amounts of money, you’d likely prefer to Bitcoin (blockchain). There’s plenty of room for different Distributed Ledger Technologies. Bank Pekao, Aleph Zero, and Degen House are proud to announce the launch of Archiv3, a project to tokenize and preserve Polish cultural heritage on the Aleph Zero blockchain, with digital reproductions securely stored in the Arctic World Archive (AWA). This initiative combines blockchain technology with a commitment to cultural preservation, ensuring the safekeeping of Poland’s artistic legacy for future generations. With Archiv3, Bank Pekao becomes the first universal bank to tokenize historical art specifically for preservation purposes. This initiative follows the bank’s earlier “Unique” project, marking its role in integrating blockchain technology with traditional banking. It also highlights the bank's ongoing commitment to modernizing its services and expanding the reach of digital assets. Notably, Archiv3 is the first project to tokenize artworks for long-term storage in the Arctic World Archive, known as the “Doomsday Library.” In its press release, Bank Pekao pointed out that the deciding factor in using the Aleph Zero blockchain has been not only its speed and security but also its attention to optimizing for a low carbon footprint and its carbon offset program. “We have chosen Aleph Zero for their privacy-focused, top-class technology combined with sound experience in cooperation with large institutions,” says Michał Walęczak, Director of the Private Banking Strategy and Development Department at Bank Pekao S.A. “Minimal carbon footprint as well as low storage costs were also important factors in our decision-making process. The process began with the creation of high-quality, museum-grade 3D scans using ultra-sensitive cameras, which capture every detail of the original artworks. The tokenized versions are subsequently archived in the Arctic World Archive, where they are expected to remain secure for at least 1,000 years. HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. Education-wise, it’s music and international relations. I’ve dabbled in journalism, content marketing, and public relations projects across Europe, helped grow a Polish-American software house as well as a SaaS scale-up awarded by Financial Times, and then co-founded Aleph Zero. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Aleph Zero is a public blockchain with enhanced privacy features. The idea is to provide a viable alternative solution to enterprises—one that allows them to use a peer-reviewed, audited public chain and save on their infrastructure cost, but at the same time still have the freedom to execute private computations and protect sensitive company data. What is the origin story? When we’ve started out, there was no blockchain that solved four main challenges existing in the DLT space: scalability, security, decentralization, and privacy. We’ve had a perfect opportunity to assemble an insanely skilled team that developed scientific innovations in two of those areas. public What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? We combine academic excellence with business know-how. As blockchain is an area that requires constant innovation, it’s difficult to find team members with the proper expertise. We’re lucky enough to not only work with more than 10 brilliant mathematical minds on a professional level—but also to have relationships with one another outside of work. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I’d be figuring out how to start building one. Once you understand what’s it about, there’s really no turning back. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? At this very moment, it’s mostly brand awareness—but developer adoption at the very next stage. We’ve just concluded a portion of our fundraising and have been able to grow the team. The next step is launching the first iteration of the product in September/October 2021, and start collecting feedback from the crypto community. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? I believe I’m a people person, so from my perspective, the most exciting aspect of building Aleph Zero is simply being a part of it. The team is insanely skilled and fun to work with. Project-wise, we have several highlights that we always bring up: our work getting peer-reviewed and accepted for presentation at an ACM conference, testnet launch, or closing the seed round. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? There’s this saying that my co-founder and friend, Adam, has: “I’m excited about blockchain technology but suspicious of startups implementing it.” It’s an interesting summary—we’re building a very efficient, decentralized infrastructure that can preserve users’ privacy. Blockchain is still in its early days as far as market adoption is concerned—and it’s easy to over-hype and over-promise real-world use cases. The real shift on a mass scale will happen most likely later than most people anticipate. It definitely is a technological breakthrough—but a global adoption is yet to come. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? The freedom, quality, and diversity of articles being published. As the only non-technical member of the founding team, my main job is to find ways of bridging the gap between an average crypto enthusiast and deep tech. We've all seen that movie right? The one that begins with the camera gently scanning an awakening horizon, promising a great tale. Then the Introduction begins; ominous words told by the goddess like voice of galadriel (Cate Blanchett) introducing the lord of the rings, or gliding text introducing the stars wars series. Whether it be science fiction, fantasy or an epic setting the story is always very similar. In a once peaceful community, a certain great threat arises which throws everyone in turmoil prompting the necessity of a particular task/journey which will throw down the evil enemies, restore peace and herald a great future for the people. Any fanboy/girl would know what I mean. Maybe you're the type that just skips the intro and goes straight to the action. Not the type for foreplay? No worries, we also got you covered. So the wise sage recants the exciting setting of the great tale about to be unraveled to the excitement of the audience. Then it begins, the story, the characters, the progression, the climax, then the big fight and the hero triumphs. Well the hero always triumphs. Except he is Sean Bean then he has to die. Moving on to our topic, a great tale is unravelling in the tech world promising an exciting future. And I'm the sage of this narrative. Welcome audience. Welcome audience. In the great tech industry, mighty geniuses arose to craft digital products that they expanded into global corporations serving billions of users around the world. Many of these products like social media platforms and hosted websites were exceedingly successful and attracted billions of users such that tonnes of user data were accumulated on the cyberspace. This created new concerns as user data could be spied on, leaked, stolen or sold with suspicious intents. This was a rather difficult problem for users to tackle as any data uploaded on the internet remained permanently recorded on a server somewhere. And these servers are managed by giant corporations with centralized control and command. Hence, people couldn't really do much about what happened with their data. Recognizing such vulnerabilities, corporations preyed upon the gold mine of data they had accumulated to fill their bottomless pockets with capitalistic abandon. Such rape. Such carelessness… Such rape. Such carelessness… Precious private data was harvested, packaged and marketed by who ever could to the highest bidder like ordinary wares in a public market. Servers were hacked, devices broken into and even the corporately managed data was auctioned to governments, powerful people and ad companies to do as they pleased. Governments spied on citizens supposedly to search for criminals but only to accumulate more power. The capable tracked who they could through their internet data. Ad companies spied on user data and even listened unpermitted through user devices to feed people with endless, unsolicited advertisements based on their preferences. Observing such calamity heroes emerged on the cyberspace to fight the titans and resist such reckless invasion of privacy. They remembered similar events that had predated such campaign. The results of centralized tyranny. The 2008 financial crises was still fresh in their memories and our heroes reflected on how innocent families with money in the bank were impoverished by the over lending of money to a certain high class which caused cash shortages that wreaked financial havoc on the lower class. In the wake of such an event they would not allow their corporations to just milk their data freely. Alarms were raised, people were awakened and campaigns were rallied prompting the US government to step in and summon at least one of the titans (Mark Zuckerberg) to explain such exploitation of private data and take steps in fixing the problem. But that was only a part of it. Motivated by the hero of the blockchain (Satoshi Nakamoto) who conjured decentralized finance against the 2008 financial crisis, web 3 developers began building decentralized solutions to permanently tackle this problem. One major storehouse of internet data is cloud technology. This is an online storage were people can upload data, host websites and even run software. Hence, many people prefer to use it as a safe, extended memory for their digital data. Cloud technology e.g., cloud storage, cloud computing, cloud hosting, cloud infrastructure etc. became a revolutionary technology that attracted tones of user data from billions of people around the world magnifying the exploitation issue. To sort this cloud data conundrum our blockchain heroes capitalized on the decentralized and public characteristics of the cloud to create more accountable IT technologies which safeguard user data in a much better fashion. For example, the decentralized infrastructure of web 3 ensured that there was no central server that could be breached for direct access to huge bytes of stored user data. Also, the transparent development and operation of the technology ensured that management of the technology could be democratized in such a way that they would be public oversight on how the technology is operated minimizing the possibilities of impunity and tyranny which arise from centralized tech platforms. An instance of such oversight is the ability to inspect the source, verification, cost and destination of P2P transactions on web 3 platforms like etherscan.io. Back in February at ETHDenver 2024, Decentralised Confidential Computing (DeCC) emerged from a grassroots movement to become a new Web3 category through a coalition of more than twenty privacy-focused blockchain networks. After several weeks of open discussion, the group moved to a formal vote, in which the overwhelming consensus was to adopt the term DeCC as the broad category name for all projects that operate in the space. DeCC projects take the concept of privacy to new levels. Previously, Web3 projects working in the area of data protection and confidential execution of smart contracts were often labeled as “privacy coins” or “privacy chains.”  This bundled these organizations into early generations of solutions focused solely on transactional privacy, like Monero or Zcash. However, DeCC projects provide the ability to create smart contracts with encrypted data, which is far more powerful than simply sending a token privately.
