Following the finest traditions of digital transformation, digital twins are a revolutionary force actively changing how countless industries operate. However, while digital transformation is a term that has confidently made its way into the lexicon of most tech companies, “ ” is a much newer and less prominent term. digital twin How Does A Digital Twin Work? On the surface, a digital twin is exactly what it sounds like – a digital copy of something real. However, a more nuanced description is that of a digital model of a real-life object created with accurate data gathered from the object in question. Prototyping While we usually associate digital twins with existing objects and systems, they can also represent things that do not exist yet, but which are in the works. For example, a virtual prototype can be built from data of an existing object or based on completely new and theoretic data/projections. As a result, you will have a model that can be preemptively tested and modified if necessary. This will cut the costs of building multiple physical prototypes when the first version is not accepted. The middle ground with PLM PLM refers to product lifecycle management, and refers to an approach used in various industries (including manufacturing) wherein the whole lifecycle of a product (for example, a car) is optimized and improved, based on all the steps together and not each of them in separate. This cycle includes many stages from the conception of a product’s idea to its production, distribution, and eventual utilization. Given that both focus on improving the quality and efficiency of product production, are these two approaches in a rivalry, or is there a middle ground? The truth is, many PLM systems are already using twins. PLM systems and digital twins Though most PLM programs apply standard formulas and data to the manufacturing process, a customized system can incorporate one or more twins to make the optimization that PLM is focused on more accurate and relevant. Furthermore, these twins provide valuable visual models of objects, which is not always the case with PLM. PLM and digital twins can both be used independently in manufacturing, each bringing substantial advantages to the process. Still, much bigger results can be achieved when the two are used together.
