While preparing for the CNCF’s CKAD or CKA certification, there could be numerous doubts, which exam to appear first, what resources to refer to, what common mistakes to avoid, etc.. Especially, if you don’t have previous knowledge or hands-on experience with Kubernetes, this could be a tough situation to be in. At InfraCloud, engineers are highly encouraged to appear for these exams and get certified. This blog post is a collaborative effort from the recently certified Infranauts to share all the insights straight from - before registering for the exam to the next steps after clearing the exam successfully. With around 50% developers CKA and CKAD certified, we share our experiences, study material, Do’s and Dont’s, FAQ, etc. about the exam. If you’re willing to start your journey in Kubernetes and are aiming to be certified, you will find this blog helpful. Shall we begin then? CKA vs CKAD certification! Which one should I take first? First things first! Before thinking of CKA or CKAD, having knowledge of Kubernetes basics is crucial. If you’re a complete newbie and do not know what on earth is Kubernetes? It is highly recommended to get familiar with the basic concepts of Kubernetes before you book your exam dates. If you’re starting out your journey into the cloud native and Kubernetes world, you can opt for course to get yourself comfortable with the basics of Kubernetes. Although one might still get confused about which exam one should go for first - CKA or CKAD? Is CKA harden than CKAD? And what is the exact difference in terms of exam curriculum and the difficulty level of both exams? To keep things simple, you can look at it this way: Kubernetes For The Absolute Beginner - Hands On by Mumshad Mannambeth is for those interested in the design, build & configuration of cloud native applications using Kubernetes. CKAD While exam is mainly for those, who want to build, manage the Kubernetes infrastructure. CKA Some of us started digging deeper over the internet and eventually find out that CKAD is broadly a subset of CKA. A few Infranauts decided to prepare for CKAD first and then for CKA, as they were ultimately aiming to gain all the possible knowledge around Kubernetes. It eventually turned out to be the right decision as CKAD also helped them improve speed and muscle memory over Kubernetes commands, which is critical for both exams. This helped them a lot in the CKA exam as most of us managed to complete almost all questions with 20-30 mins still left with us to solve the only couple of complex questions that had been flagged and skipped for later. Study material Many Infranauts have taken the CKAD course by Mumshad Mannambeth available on Udemy. After clearing CKAD with that course, some of us also opted for another CKA course for the CKA certification. The primary reason to go through these courses was the number of recommendations it had from the community. Few of the certified Infranauts had also watched a few of his videos on YouTube and always found it easy to follow. So yes, these courses are highly recommended to anyone planning to get CKA / CKAD certified. As you might guess, this is not the only course in the market - there are plenty of them. Study materials are available in other formats like blogs, GitHub Repos, YouTube videos containing different scenario-based practice questions/answers. You may choose at your own will like this one that some of us followed from Medium for the CKAD exam. You should also check out the video by Harshit Singhvi on exam experience and tips on YouTube. At the end of the day, what matters the most is how much time you spend practicing different scenarios. We can’t emphasize enough how important the labs are. Irrespective of the course you take, they all have labs and mock tests. Don’t skip any of them. They are all equally important. Mistakes to avoid Don’t get trapped into registering the exam date six months in advance and then start the actual study. If you’re not fully prepared by the time nearing your exam date, you might get nervous and feel to postpone the exam to study more and more. This cycle never ends. Even if you started late, don’t be inconsistent with your study. One would study one day and skip for another two days. Don’t do that. Be consistent and stick to a schedule. Do NOT skip labs. One might get trapped thinking it would be nice to go through all the lectures at once and then come back to labs. Nope, not a good idea! Completing a course is one thing. But you won’t know how much you understand until you take the mock tests. So don’t avoid taking them until you’re left with last 3-4 days to study. Don’t keep postponing till the last day of validity of your particular exam voucher. If you delay it till the last day of voucher, and if you couldn’t clear the exam on the first attempt, you’ll leave no retake option. So, prepare, practice, and appear for the exam at least a week before the last date. Do’s for CKA and CKAD Certification The most obvious one - practice, practice, and some more practice. Make it a habit to take a lecture and do the lab that follows with it. If possible, complete the courses first, and when you think you are ready for the exam, go ahead and apply for the certification. This gives you a year after you have completed the course. It is enough time to test your skills. The discussions in the Slack forum of KodeKloud CKA and CKAD group also helped us play and try different variety of questions/scenarios during preparation. So, keep an eye on it. Plus, feel free to seek suggestions from the forum in case of any doubts. Practice with complete commands instead of binding an alias for like everything. In each mock test, try to complete the test 15 min before the deadline. This gives you time to revisit the questions. Monitor your time as you practice. Do the labs and mock tests repeatedly (at least three times). Identify what is slowing you down and plan accordingly. On the day of the exam, make sure to clean your desk and not have anything (apart from a transparent water bottle). On the exam day, keep an alternative internet source handy in case of Wi-Fi internet goes down (trust me, it happens more than you believe) In the exam, if you analyze that any particular question is going to take more than 6-7 mins to solve, flag/mark it to solve for later and come back once you solve the rest. Don’ts for CKA and CKAD Certification Don’t overwhelm yourself with an alias for everything. Don’t panic if you are stuck; simply flag/mark the particular question and move ahead. You can always come back to it later. Don’t give the exam on the last day (like many folks do). At the time of the exam, other than your system, don’t have anything on the table. Don’t overkill yourself with Kubernetes the Hard Way unless you have time. Don’t ignore the candidate handbook. Read it and follow the instructions. Final tips & tricks Final tips & tricks The exam clusters are set up with mostly in the Ubuntu environment. kubeadm Do check out the details and practice accordingly. CKA and CKAD environment Try to use auto-completion while running Kubernetes commands. It will be much more helpful and effective in the exam. Here is how you can set up the auto-completion: $ k= alias 'kubectl' $ <(kubectl completion bash) source $ >> ~/.bashrc echo "source <(kubectl completion bash)" $ complete -F __start_kubectl k The above commands can be found in the . And, you can use them (some of us have used them ourselves), as they are listed in the docs. kubectl cheat sheet yes As you do your labs, you must search the docs. Especially for resources like PV, PVC, Ingress, RBAC resources etc. This trains your brain to remember the correct links, in case you need to refer to the docs during the exam. Saves a lot of time. If you have time during preparation, take both the courses CKA and CKAD. This will surely help. Get familiar with vi or vim. We’re not sure if nano will be available, so prefer vi or vim. GNU Emacs is available but the usual key bindings like C-p, C-n don’t work inside most of the browsers. You don’t need tmux or screen, if you have saved your aliases or other bash settings in ~/.bashrc. Get used to pasting text using the mouse middle/center key. The mouse secondary key doesn’t work in the exam environment. Useful commands Here is a list of commands that you will definitely need during practice or exam: nonextensive # list running processes $ ps -aux # search string the output for in $ ps -aux | grep -i 'string' # search multiple expressions the output (exp can be plain a string too) for in $ ps -aux | grep -e -e 'exp-one' 'exp-two' # get details about network interfaces $ ifconfig # list network interfaces and their IP address $ ip a # get the route details $ ip r # check service status and also show logs $ systemctl status kubelet # restart a service $ systemctl restart kubelet # reload the service daemon, you changed the service file if $ systemctl daemon reload # detailed logs of the service $ journalctl -u kubelet # list out ports, protocol and what processes are listening on those ports $ netstat -tunlp How to book the CKA and CKAD exams? You can book the exams from page. Linux Foundation Exam experience CKAD exam experience On the exam day, try to log in 15 minutes before the exam. Proctor will make sure to follow their process to check your ID proof as well as room, your desk. The entire process should normally take 15-20 minutes or more, but don’t panic as the proctor will only start the exam after all the verification process is complete and you’re comfortable to start the exam. CKAD exam questions are comparatively quite straightforward, but it would be a race against time, as some of the questions will contain many Kubernetes objects creation and if you fail to create any, would take more time to debug and understand them. CKA exam experience The exam experience was a little rollercoaster ride for some of us, as we lost internet connection almost 4-5 times during the exam. Each time after the connection reset, we made sure that previous work is not lost by checking the answers to some of the previously solved questions. Proctor typically makes sure to hold your exam (to avoid time loss) and stop the timer and resume it once your connection is restored. But this whole experience can make you nervous during and after the exam (with a nightmare of all work might be lost, resulting in failure). Few of us had practiced enough, so we were able to solve 14-15 out of 17 questions in 1.5 hours and spend the rest of almost 30 minutes to try to solve the 2-3 questions which we initially found challenging and had marked (and parked) to solve later. FAQs for the CKA and CKAD Certification Some of the questions which crossed our minds while preparing (apart from the ones available on the ). official FAQ page of the Linux Foundation Yes, we are allowed to use dual monitors 1) Can I use dual monitors in the exam? Yes, we are allowed to use them as long as they are referring to official Kubernetes documentation allowed for the exam 2) Can I bookmarks link and use them during the exam? Results are typically out after the exact 24 hours of your examination but can get delayed till 36 hours in some cases. In case of delay, you can raise a for the same. 3) When would the result be out after the exam? support ticket Yes, your work gets autosaved at frequent intervals. 4) Does our work remains saved in case of internet connectivity loss? Automated scripts most probably evaluate them. 5) Who evaluates the CKA / CKAD / CKS exams? Humans or bots? Focus on solving all the questions and scenarios that you had found difficult in 1st attempt and the topic you found the first time during your exam. 6) What should I be more prepared for if I get failed in my 1st attempt? You can raise a for the same. 7) Whom to reach out in case of any challenges faced during the exam? support ticket Once you’re able to solve all the labs and mock tests in less than 40-45 minutes, consider you’re ready for the exam. Both CKA and CKAD exams are of 2 hours once you start the exam (excluding the time required for identity verification with the proctor before you start the exam). 9) What is the duration of the exam? Both CKA and CKAD contain 17-19 questions (approximately). 10) How many questions does CKAD or CKA exam contain? Questions’ weightage varies from 2% to 13% based on the work required to solve them. 11) What is the minimum or maximum weightage of any question in the exam? Yes, a progress bar available on the top-left corner of your exam console. 12) Is a digital watch available on the exam console? You can practice/focus on the JSON expressions captured as part of the , but don’t spend too much time mastering JSON expressions from an exam perspective. 13) Do we need to be more fluent in jsonpath syntax without any external website reference during the exam? cheat sheet Personally, many of us felt the actual exam was comparatively easier than Killer.sh simulator. 14) Are exam questions as difficult as one available on the killer.sh simulator? CKAD and CKA Certifications: Which to Take First and How to Prepare

Q: What do a revolutionary from the 1800s, a supercomputer from the 1980s, and a tech start-up which supports decentralisation have in common? A: They’re all fictional. 🤣 Hilarious, right? Introducing the Luddites Let’s tie these things together. First of all, the revolutionary above refers to the folkloric figure of Ned Ludd, also known variously as General, Captain, and King Ludd. Whether there was ever a real Ned Ludd is very much up for debate. Sadly, since the Luddites were pretty much wiped out a couple of centuries ago by the combination of sending the military after them and executing them when captured (they threatened the almighty profit margin after all), we’re not likely to get an answer any time soon. What’s important for this article is that Ned Ludd was an idea. He was a mythical figurehead of a decentralised movement working to protect the livelihood of the individual worker, safeguarding their autonomy in the face of capitalist mechanical automation which worked to reduce them (or rather their cheaper, unskilled replacements) to cogs in a commercial machine. The Luddites are far from the first decentralised movement, and definitely not the last. They were unique, to my knowledge, in being the first to assemble a decentralised movement to oppose centralisation and concentration of power in the hands of a few. Those few being the capitalists who purchased the machines with the aim of exploiting their workforce by removing the need for expensive expertise. The Luddites were presented then, and are again now, as straightforward anti-progress revolutionaries. Even now the name is used as an insult, suggesting someone obstructs progress for the sake of obstruction. Ironically, those at the cutting edge of technologies designed to protect individual autonomy and identity have more in common with the Luddites than they do with most of the high-tech start-ups who claim to be fighting their corners. And the Supercomputer? In 1983 a film came out which became a cornerstone of hacker culture. No, not , I’m talking about the rightly-famous . Aside from being an innovative film, provides a brilliant illustration both of the danger of centralising power and authority, and of placing too much trust in technological infallibility. Hackers Wargames Wargames At the centre of the film is a supercomputer, Joshua (or more formally the WOPR), which controls the entire US nuclear arsenal and defensive systems. Even if you haven’t seen it, you can probably predict the rest of the film just from that. The centralisation piece is particularly striking when you know three names which deserve to go down in history (and likely others we don’t know): Stanislav Petrov, Vasily Arkhipov, and Sir David Ormsby-Gore. Their stories are worth looking up, but for this article what’s important to know is that it was their individual decision-making, their exercise of their autonomy, that means we’re not living in a nuclear hellscape today. As Joshua famously writes in , when there is only mutually assured destruction the only winning move is not to play. Wargames Obviously this lesson cannot be ascribed to our modern world, where we are completely dependent on massive interconnected systems designed to squeeze all the joy and freedom out of life and turn them into profitable numbers while having us make ‘the right’ decisions (i.e. buying the things advertised to us). Tech Start-Ups Are Fine Though, Right? And that brings us to the modern tech start-up, especially those that preach decentralisation and autonomy. Some, I’m sure, are sincere - it’s a statistical impossibility that all of them are presenting a smokescreen, but it’s definitely a minority. There’s a whole rainbow of -washings (green, pink, etc.) that companies use to publicly show off their credentials, whether social, environmental, diversity, or otherwise, while carrying on as normal behind the scenes, but I’m unsure what colour would apply to autonomy. VC-backed start-ups are funded by investment. Investors are looking for a return on their investment - usually by selling the company to bigger investors later on. Even if the first investors strongly believe in the ideals of the company rather than just the opportunity for profit, success and a sale dilutes everything further and further from those initial aims. Driving and supporting autonomy and decentralisation of power inevitably builds systems where it is harder for a single entity to extract value in the form of profit for themselves. Decentralised systems are resilient, not robust. They’re sustainable, not efficient. They tend towards value-sharing, not profit-making. This is a problem if the key incentives that drive an organisation are monetary returns on investments. What’s the Answer? Is there anything that can be done? Well, to a degree. The system is clearly built in such a way that gathering the resources to change it requires a level of investment which makes it hard to then change it without causing yourself damage. Taking part in these larger systems constrains our choices and autonomy, while opting out of them leaves us with ideological movements. Movements which are often unable to take effective actions, and easy for coordinated efforts to subvert for their own ends. At some point there may be enough smaller entities which aren’t profit-driven pulling in the same direction to make a difference, but until then all we can do is just not play the game. Instead of pursuing the big pay cheques of major tech companies, look to smaller organisations with different motivations. A question I was always told to ask when going to interviews was “why are you in business?” If the answer was “to make money”, it was not a sustainable place to work. For an organisation money should be a means to an end. Treating it as an end in itself is just chasing after a high score that means nothing outside the arcade (80s reference just to tie back to there). Wargames Take a lesson from the Luddites. Yes, they failed. Yes, they were utterly crushed by a system that turned people into nothing more than components in a money-making machine with no autonomy, no power, and no identity beyond ‘worker’. Failure doesn’t mean they were wrong. This article should not be taken as an incentive to or an endorsement of taking direct destructive action against datacentres, infrastructure, technology companies or similar. The author fully endorses the ideals of the Luddites, not their methods, or at least not the methods that will lead to similar reactions to those they faced.

You know what they look like: staid, no-nonsense letters informing you that your private information has been obtained by malcontents, and in exchange for the inevitable headaches you will now face, you’ve been given the generous gift of free credit monitoring. A Cybersecurity Awareness Month miracle! Cybersecurity Awareness Month I was promised a future with flying cars, and instead I have free identity protection services from Kroll. (No offense, Kroll.) Unfortunately, my experience isn’t unique. According to Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report, ransomware, which represents nearly a quarter of all breaches, is “ubiquitous among organizations of all sizes and in all industries,” and cryptocurrency-involved breaches increased fourfold over the previous year. The latest IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report also finds that the polled breached organizations were more likely to pass incident costs onto consumers (57 percent) than to increase security investments (51 percent)—which is, um, not confidence-inspiring. (If you’d like to be horrified, here’s a running list of data breaches so far this year.) 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report data breaches so far this year I prefer curiosity to despair, so I picked up a fascinating book to learn more about how we got here, called “Fancy Bear Goes Phishing: The Dark History of the Information Age, in Five Extraordinary Hacks.” Once I read it, I reached out to the author, Scott Shapiro, a professor at Yale Law School and the founding director of the Yale Cybersecurity Lab. Read on to learn about the first time Americans heard the word “internet,” what you can do to keep yourself safe, the distinction between “upcode” and “downcode,” and, disturbingly, something called a “god bot.” Syed: We’re 13 years out from the day President Obama declared cybersecurity to be a top priority and established a White House office for these issues. And here we are, where the volume of global cyberattacks is up dramatically this year compared to last year. What’s happening? Syed: Shapiro: We live in an information society where wealth, prestige, and status depend on the transfer, manipulation, and storage of information. We also live in a world where even knowledge workers don’t understand anything about how information is processed. Shapiro: That’s why I wrote the book. I have a technical background, I’ve published in computer science, and I thought to myself, if someone like me can’t understand cybersecurity, something is wrong. I wanted to write something that explained: How does this work? What’s my risk? Is cyberwar going to happen? The existing books are either eat-your-vegetables compliance books, total doomsday, or for advanced hackers. That began a seven-year journey of learning and researching interesting stories about cybercrime. While people are not always interested in cybersecurity, they are fascinated by hacking and cybercrime—like true crime, but the truth is that crime is now cybercrime. And that’s a way to introduce the issue broadly. Syed: When people hear “cybersecurity” or “hacking,” they think of “WarGames” or Angelina Jolie in “Hackers”—the focus is on code. But you challenge that in your book, with this distinction between “upcode” and “downcode” problems. Syed: Shapiro: When you watch movies, you see zeros and ones across the screen, you see people typing really quickly. So the natural assumption is that these are technical activities with technical solutions. That’s a mistake. It’s actually a human problem that needs a human solution. Shapiro: Imagine you’re sitting at your keyboard. “Downcode” is all the code below your fingertips, meaning your operating system, application, network protocols. But “upcode” is everything above your fingertips, meaning your personal habits, your beliefs, social norms, laws, professional ethics—everything that guides behavior. And so the argument in my book is that people think they can make our lives more secure by fixing the downcode, but actually, that’s too late. Because downcode is the product of human beings following incentives set out by norms. If we want to be more secure, let’s figure out the vulnerabilities in upcode. Where are our politics failing us? Where are the bad incentives that the law gives or culture allows for developers or users? This is good news: There are so many kinds of upcode, which means there are so many ways to intervene and make our systems more secure. Syed: Let’s stick with that “upcode” lens, especially when it comes to industry norms and behavior. What are companies doing about rising cybersecurity threats? And what are they not doing that they should be? Syed: Shapiro: Companies do only what they are forced to do. Cyberspace is a realm of vast legal impunity, because the law does not impose costs on many actors. There is little legal liability, so you have moments where norms do the work—like when 9/11 happened, a heightened sense of security made companies step up. I will note that President Biden in his national cybersecurity strategy called for legal liability for software vulnerabilities, which is a major deal. That creates incentives to build securely, not engage in endless patching. Shapiro: only what they are forced to do cybersecurity strategy Otherwise the regulatory landscape for cybersecurity is voluntary, private. Regulators have their hands tied to a large extent. Sure, the Federal Trade Commission has jurisdiction for misleading consumers, and so if something is insecure, they could go after someone for that. But the problem of insecurity is not misbranding; it is that your valuable information is not secure. Regulators need to make that happen. Unfortunately, Congress no longer seems to exist. Syed: Data journalists have gained many a wrinkle worrying about the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and what constitutes unauthorized access when collecting data. (We were so concerned about it that we filed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in Van Buren v. United States). Tell us about one of the people mentioned in the book, Robert Morris, who was the first person convicted under the CFAA. Syed: Van Buren v. United States Van Buren v. United States Shapiro: So on Nov. 2, 1988, a first-year graduate student named Robert Tappan Morris Jr. released a self-reproducing program—what we now call a computer worm—onto the nascent internet. He went to dinner, came back, and the whole internet crashed. He thought he was conducting an experiment on how many machines he could access, but the worms reproduced, wildly overloaded computers, and crashed them. Shapiro: This was actually the first time that Americans ever heard the word “internet”—because of the Morris worm. The media needed a way to identify what this new thing was! It’s a sad story, in the sense that Morris was charged, convicted, and had to tell his father what he had done—and his dad was the head of cybersecurity for the National Security Agency. Can you imagine? You call up your father and say, like, “I know it’s your one job to keep the country safe, and I ruined it.” At least he didn’t serve time in jail. He was given community service. Syed: As a parent, I really feel that one. Oof. Let’s go from history to the future. So we live in the era of the rise of generative AI, there is concern and now evidence that people are using generative AI to tailor their phishing campaigns. How do you think about how generative AI changes the arms race around cybersecurity? Syed: Shapiro: The arms race in one sentence is that you have AI as attacker, AI as defender, and then you have AI as the target of exploitation. Shapiro: One thing that’s out there—and this is AI as attacker—are ways that AI can make it easy to manipulate and trick others. For example, these things called “god bots.” They’re these chatbots that claim to tell you what God will say or Jesus will say. And there are many of them now, and they’re going to be an unbelievably powerful tool of manipulation and exploitation. God wants you to pay this person in crypto, yada, yada, yada. That’s very scary. And there are many of them now And then there’s AI as defender—we’ve been using AI for over a decade, helping us to defend against intrusions and networks. There’s also prompt injections, poisoning training data, adversarial machine learning—this is where AI is the target of exploitation. There are a bunch of ways attackers use to try to affect how the AI itself works. Syed: God bots, great. I needed more nightmare fodder. On a lighter note, let’s think about proactive measures. If you’re a regular person just living in the world and subject to all these systems, what should you do to protect yourself? Syed: Shapiro: On one hand, you can’t solve the problem yourself. You can’t avoid Equifax if you have credit, so when Equifax was hacked, everyone’s data went all over the place. Without very strong government action, there isn’t much we can do in those cases. Shapiro: It’s getting worse. We live in a training capitalist society, meaning information is important because it can train neural nets. That’s the way money will be made. Companies will collect data, and since breaches are all over the place, there are no longer real reputational costs associated with a breach. The only thing that can change is if you impose liability, not just two years of free credit monitoring services. That doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do. I would say the two easiest things you could possibly do are to enable two-factor authentication and to not click on any link or open an attachment from somebody you do not know. Write back to them and say, “I’m sorry, who are you?” Google them, do something. Because cybercrime is a high-volume, low-margin business—attackers do not want to bother with you if you make it a little harder for them. So that’s the good news. The bad news is, we live in a society where all our data is in the hands of people who are irresponsible. That doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do Syed: Where do you think people should start their journey? Syed: Shapiro: At Yale, I teach a class where students learn how to hack. My partner Sean O’Brien and I have put the entire course online for people. We go from soup to nuts—from you don’t know anything to, at the end of 12 sessions, you can do a lot. Shapiro: teach a class where students learn how to hack We don’t do this because we want to create hackers. We want to create educated, secure people who can understand the adversary, know what they’re dealing with, and develop effective techniques.
