Too Long; Didn't Read

Wordle is a web-based puzzle game that lets users guess what the word of the day for a day. There is only one word per day and there is no way to get too much of it. Users never spoil the experience for others: the results are just a set of black, yellow, and green squares. No ads, no pop-ups, no messages in the corners, nothing. Are you among more than 2 million people whose mornings start with playing Wordle? This puzzle game has had a hold on us for quite a while now. Guessing a 5-word mystery is the highlight of the day for many users. But why is it so? Why did such a simple idea that has many analogs suddenly blow up? Let’s discuss.

Reason №1: Only one word per day

First of all, you can’t play Wordle for hours. Of course, you can always take your time and think before each try for long-long minutes, but there is only one word to guess for a day. Such a limitation makes Wordle more interesting in the long run because there is simply no way to get too much of it.

Add the fact that many people are sharing their results on social media and showing on which try they got it right. It makes you even more curious about today’s secret word. After seeing post after post about Wordle on Twitter, we all eventually give up and surrender ourselves to the word of the day.

Reason №2: No ads, no distractions

Have you noticed anything unusual about Wordle’s interface design? Yes, you can call it quite simple but the creator doesn’t claim it to be UI/UX innovation. And yes, it is solely a web-based solution. You won’t find a Wordle mobile app. At least, an official one. By the way, our team has recently transformed Worlde into a Flutter app, just for the fun of it. You can find our tutorial here.

One major distinction in Wordle design is the absence of any ads. No pop-ups, no messages in the corners, nothing. Such a situation can be quite rare in free web games, don’t you agree? Because the creator of this game made it, first of all, for his partner and relatives, he did not bother to ruin the game with advertisements. And now, you too can get the best, undisturbed, experience.

Reason №3: You want to know what the word was!

One more reason why Wordle is living in your head rent-free is the all-present mystery of the word. Would you give up after two tries and never find out what the word starting with N and with A in the middle is? Probably not. And that’s one of the main Wordle’s mechanisms: we want to know what the word was.

As we have mentioned, social media is an important factor in the whole Wordle phenomenon. People are united by the urge to discover what the word was. We discuss how hard the word was, did we like it, and so on. People never spoil the experience for others: the results are just a set of black, yellow, and green squares.

Is Wordle just a temporary addiction or it’s there to stay? Who knows. One thing is sure: it changed our criteria for a good game. We don’t care about design trends or complex mechanisms, and we certainly don’t want any ads. Wordle gave us an understanding that we want a good old simple puzzle game. And better with a feeling of scarcity to it.
